Thanksgiving

Pumpkin pancakes with family and friends, perhaps a new Thanksgiving tradition. I am so thankful for wonderful family and friends, they came even though it was a last minute invitation. We had planned to celebrate as usual with some other Swedish-American friends the weekend after, but it was unfortunately canceled do to sickness. Maybe we will celebrate in January instead?

A day-trip turned weekend getaway in a charming town close to Stockholm. Sigtuna is over a thousand years old, and we enjoyed walking around looking at rune stones and ruins, as well as enjoying the summer sunshine by the lake.

Tallinn, Estonia

We took the overnight ferry to Tallinn with Jen and Mark. We enjoyed three days of wandering, climbing towers, eating, and admiring beautiful Tallinn. We spent a great afternoon and evening with our new friends Rait and Kersti, couchsurfers from Tallinn. It was a wonderful trip!

Vienna, Austria

And finally, Vienna! We enjoyed being the guests of our lovely friends Magda and Bernhard, who couchsurfed with us last year. They gave us a grand tour of the city, took us to a traditional Viennese coffee house, and out to their favorite jazz club, and gave us great tips for exploring on our own the next day. We enjoyed seeing some different areas of Vienna, and touring the beautiful Schönbrunn Palace. We ate way too much cake, mmmm. I love Vienna!

Brno, Czech Republic

We rang in the New Year with our dear friends Martina and Michael in Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic. We met Martina and Michael through couchsurfing.com when they surfed our couch last year, and we are so happy they opened their home and hearts to us over the holiday. We had a great time hanging out, seeing Brno, eating, laughing, sharing with them. I was also very excited to see the place where Gregor Mendel lived, studied, and discovered.

Christmas 2008

We celebrated Christmas at home in Skarpnäck. So blessed to have friends and family who braved my nasty cold germs to be with us :) The family came on the 23rd for a somewhat traditional Christmas dinner. Josef and our friend Gunilla were with us for a warm, cozy Christmas Eve. Jonathan and I are enjoying a peaceful, relaxing Christmas day together.

Geocaching

A sunset walk turned into Jonathan's and my first geocaching experience. Our couchsurfer Bernhard (from Vienna, Austria) introduced us to the sport and we walked to Lake Flaten to hunt for a cache. We found it! And enjoyed the beautiful view over the lake.

Stockholm in the sun

Sunny days have been scarce lately. We took advantage of this one to walk from Medborgarplatsen to Östermalm. Stockholm is so beautiful. But it was too cold to take my mittens off to take more pictures. We discovered this amazing hot dog stand tucked away a couple blocks from Östermalm square, we were attracted by the long line. Wonderful sausages from around the world served with sour kraut and French bread.

New Years

We had couch surfers Kimberly and Tom from Texas with us for New Year's, and a surprise visit from our fellow Interconnect alumni Jen for New Year's Eve. We went out in the snow and rain and watched the crazy and impressive firework displays of our neighbors all around. Jonathan even contributed to the festivities with his Viking bomb.

In Swedish tradition, Jonathan came in singing with a tray with birthday treats and candles on the morning of my birthday. That evening he arranged a surprise romantic candlelit dinner for two in our apartment cooperative's banquet hall!

The Chocolate Festival

We went to Chokladfestivalen, the Chocolate Festival, at Nordiska Museet, the Nordic Museem. We ate lots of samples and then bought pralines and had coffee. We also checked out the museeums regular exhibits, a big dose of Swedishness! My camera battery died so I only got a few pictures.

Tall Ships

Tall Ships Race is in Stockholm this weekend. We took a sail on Eva and Lalla's boat with Jenny and Henrik. We at at Hermans Trädgård, a great vegeterian restaurant with a beautiful view over the city, the tall ships silhoutted in the sunset. On Monday the ships left the harbor.
